Tourist Information

Egypt is a wonderful holiday destination offering such a variety of differing experiences to the traveller.

The evidence of ancient civilizations is everywhere, in the towns and cities, in the deserts and even at the coast. The sheer magnificence of the pyramids and temples is overwhelming.

The Red Sea coast resorts with their backdrop of cinnamon coloured mountains and their clear blue sea are a snorkeller’s paradise as the waters are filled with a huge variety of colourful fish and beautiful corals. Numerous water sporting opportunities are available.

Because there are so many things to see, many people choose to take a Nile cruise which gives them a taste of both the ancient and the modern.
Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs, is unique. No where else on earth can you find the wealth of antiquities, the pyramids and the vast temples and monuments. Added to this, the Red Sea Riviera provides miles of sandy beaches, clear blue water, beautiful coral reefs, wide ranging water sport facilities and hotels that pamper to the nth degree.

With Nile cruises, camel rides, jeep safaris, hot air balloons and numerous other pursuits, Egypt draws many tourists to its shores. All of this and much more is just a five hour flight from the UK.

Health

No vaccinations are required to visit any of the countries we feature but it is worth checking with your GP about those which might be recommended. Most of the larger hotels in Egypt can obtain common medicines but of course please bring your own prescription medicine with you as although it may be available in pharmacies, it may be known under a different name. Stomach upsets can occur due to the heat and change of diet, so it is best to bring preventive medicine with you. Remember to drink plenty of water while on holiday, particularly during the summer months, even if you don’t feel thirsty, this is to prevent dehydration. Drink only bottled water which is generally available in restaurants and shops.

Tipping

Tipping, or baksheesh as it is called in Egypt, is a way of life, and porters, waiters, temple guardians etc expect a small tip, around E£1 for a porter, E£2 coach driver, E£50 cleaner if staying in a hotel. Tip around 15 per cent on a restaurant bill. However, on a Nile cruise, you will be asked to pay a sum of money at the start of your cruise from which your guide will pay all tipping outside the boat for you throughout your holiday usually about UK£1 per person per day. Then it is customary on a Nile Cruise to trip the crew collectively at the end of your holiday so all staff get something – about UK£3 per person per day is the norm.

Communication

It is expensive to telephone home from hotels. In Egypt Phonecards cost E£20 or E£30 for a approx. 3-4 minute call to the UK. Ask your representative for further advice. Tip: When calling in Egypt, do not allow the number of rings to exceed 11 as you will be charged anyway, even if the call has not been answered.

Currency

Climate

With the small exception of its strip of Mediterranean coastline, the whole of Egypt has an arid desert climate. The weather is constantly hot and dry, with blistering heat in the summer months. The best time to travel to Egypt is during the winter, between December and February, when temperatures range between 68°F to 79°F (20 to 26°C).
