The Dutch founded the settlement of New Amsterdam on Manhattan island around 1610. The Dutch settlers purchased Manhattan and Staten islands from the native tribes. In 1664, the British took control of the city, and renamed in New York. As an important port and trade hub, the city started to quickly grow.
Today, the New York skyline is one of the most famous city sights in the world. The big, bustling, frenetically paced city has earned itself two nicknames - 'the Big Apple', and 'the city that never sleeps at night'.
A busy sightseeing day in New York could start off with the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Statue was a gift from France in 1886 - it was the first sight of the USA for the many million immigrants who arrived from Europe. The museum at Ellis Island tells the story of the immigrants poignantly.
Next would be a visit to the Empire State Building, New York's most famous skyscraper. The viewing gallery on the top floor gives breathtaking views across the city and Hudson bay.
Follow this with a relaxing stroll through Central Park - an oasis of greenery amongst the concrete and tarmac.
In the evening, take in one of the many brilliant Broadway shows for some wonderful entertainment.
Eating in New York is one of the fascinating things you can do, there is so much on offer it is hard to chose and mostly inexpensive. However it's best to avoid tourist areas like Little Italy and Times Square if you want to enjoy the best values.
